Biography
Misty is from Hot Springs, AR. She grew up in a Christian home and knew at an early
age that being a nurse was her calling. She was diagnosed at 18 months old with type
I diabetes and having the medical knowledge so early in life she knew she wanted to
take care of others. As a first generation college student she immediately after high
school completed her basics for nursing school. She has grown in her faith at Grand
Avenue Baptist church where she joined her husband’s childhood church family in 2004.
Through the years she has advanced in her career from patient care tech to RN to nurse
practitioner to now educator. Prior to Ouachita, Misty has worked as a family nurse
practitioner at Fountain Lake Family Medicine and St. Vincent Women’s Center and Pregnancy
Clinic.
She is a member of the American Academy Of Nurse Practitioners and Tri Lakes Nurse
Practitioner Alliance. She is involved in her church teaching preschool, attending
women’s small group and serving for community outreach such as VBS. She likes to spend
time outdoors with her husband Darby and two beautiful daughters Katelynn and Lauren,
especially at lake Ouachita. She enjoys traveling, beach trips and eating good Mexican
food.
Q&A
Why did you come to Ouachita?
The reason I came to Ouachita was actually because of a Facebook message that they
were hiring. It was at a time in my career that I was in a crossroads of what I wanted
to do and what where God was leading me. I know that message was due to God’s perfect
timing and something I could not ignore. The thought of working in a Christian environment
and a place that was involved in medical missions were the reasons why I came to Ouachita.
Why did you decide to become a professor?
I decided to become a professor to teach the next generation of future nurses. I want
them to feel empowered and have a safe place to learn.
Why is your subject an important one in our world?
Nursing is not going away. There have been nursing shortages throughout time. There
are so many careers within nursing and all of them are important from bedside nursing
in hospitals to nursing in clinic setting to nursing informatics to nurse management
and nursing in higher education.
What do you want future students to know about your degree program?
I want students to know that you can go any where and be a good nurse if you know
the information. However, if you want to be an exceptional nurse you need to apply
the information you have to people as individuals. To love God and to love others
is what we are called to do. If you apply loving others with an inquisitive attitude
directed to your nursing career you will become an exceptional nurse. OBU provides
the environment for this type of learning based on Christian values.
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I love to watch crime shows such as law and order, go to the lake,
travel with my family, grow my indoor plants, watch school sports, and eat dinner
with family and friends.
What has been a meaningful Bible verse or passage for you?
“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen
you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’”
– Isaiah 41:10 NKJ
This verse has reinforced that I am not alone. Fear and worry are natural human responses
but I am so amazed that my God cares about each fear and every worry and reassures
me in his word that I am not alone, he is with me. Another important passage is the
story of David and Goliath. Nursing school can seem like a “Goliath” a giant obstacle
to overcome. Remember take one day at a time and you have the strength of the Lord
behind you just like David, especially if you are answering a calling.
