About
Dr. Marshall J. Horton joined the faculty at Ouachita in 2006 and serves as Regions Bank Professor of Economics
and Finance and chair of the Department of Business Administration in the Hickingbotham
School of Business. He teaches courses in economics, finance and business ethics.
Professor Horton previously served as Puterbaugh Professor of Free Enterprise at Southern
Arkansas University and Associate Professor of Business Administration at LeTourneau
University. In addition, he served as President of the Federation of Business Disciplines
(FBD), the Arkansas College Teachers of Economics and Business (ACTEB), the Southwestern
Society of Economists (SSE) and the SAU Faculty Senate.
Before entering the academy full-time, he worked as a financial analyst at the Federal
Home Loan Bank of Dallas and Guaranty Federal Bank. In addition, he has served as
a consultant to the Arkansas Department of Economic Development, the Golden Triangle
Economic Development Council and the North Texas Commission. He has taught as an adjunct
faculty member for Henderson State University, Southern Methodist University, Texas
Wesleyan University, the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Arkansas,
Fayetteville.
Horton has written or co-authored dozens of articles for peer-reviewed journals. His
academic areas of interest include edufacturing, semiculture and economic history.
He earned Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts degrees in economics from Southern
Methodist University, a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in economics and
finance from Texas Wesleyan College and served as a graduate assistant in economics
at Rice University.
Dr. Horton and his wife, Mary Esther, have six children and six grandchildren. He
also is an avid forager and non-traditional farmer.

What do you like most about your field?
Economics tries to use market mechanisms to enable us to make better decisions with
fewer unintended consequences.
Why did you enter the teaching profession?
I wanted to make a difference and still have time and space enough to think.
What is a favorite moment of working with students at Ouachita?
There are too many to even begin with!
